Look under your feet as you stroll through the city and see the humble sidewalk. We dress them up with spills, spit, blobs of gum, and sometimes paint and words. They hold our DNA; they lead to places we live.

If this was my bus stop...
I would have eaten that Halloween candy bar
And not dropped the wrapper
to be carried by the wind.
Although I found this one
skipping down Kingston Road.
I would dangle my foot
in the bubbly stream
of blue sweet water
cascading off the curb.
The fresh gum would pop up
in 3d holograms
of former bus stop patrons
chatting the time away.
The leaf skeletons would call my name
and ask my destination.
Time would pass quickly
and the smell
would be sweet.

This is the first of my sidewalk series called Fashion Sidewalk inspired by the corner of Spadina and Richmond in Toronto. Its in the middle of the fashion district where colourful accessories complement the black clothing. The image caputures the transition from fresh coloured gum to old black gum. The tape measure has no numbers. Cigarette butts wait at the bus stop.

Detail looking down the sidewalk
of black silk masquerading as trodden-on gum.

Detail of Cigarette butts (really just nice and clean cigarette butt papers).
